PUBLIC NOTIFICATION REGARDING DISCONTINUED PUBLIC ACCESS THROUGH BONELLI BLUFFS RV RESORT & CAMPGROUND AT FRANK G. BONELLI REGIONAL PARK
The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation is making this public notification to provide information and clarification regarding recent measures taken by the operator of the Bonelli Bluffs RV Resort & Campground (RV Resort), located within Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park (Bonelli Regional Park), who has discontinued public access through the RV facility.
For many years, Bonelli Regional Park visitors have been able to access the park through a paved pathway, which overlooks the Puddingstone Reservoir and runs through the RV Resort and Campground. The RV Resort and Campground is owned by The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation; however, it is operated and maintained through a contract with a third-party concessionaire as authorized by the provision of Government Code Section 25907. The concessionaire has the authority to make decisions regarding both the use and access of the RV Resort and Campground. It is important to note that the subject pathway is not part of Bonelli Regional Park's officially established trail network, but rather an access road intended for vehicle emergency ingress and egress of the RV Resort only.
As widely noted on social media and in public comment forums, physical barriers were recently installed at each end of the path, no longer allowing for continued public access through the RV Resort. This decision was based on health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as, adverse impacts to the RV Resort related to heavy use of the path, picnic areas, and restrooms creating excess litter and trash, theft of property, and damage and graffiti within the RV Resort's premises.
The Department of Parks and Recreation understands that many park users and community members have grown very accustomed to using the path through the RV Resort to access to Bonelli Regional Park. With that in mind, we are actively seeking ways to continue to provide access to Bonelli Park while ensuring the integrity and safety of the RV Resort property. We will keep the community informed of our progress. It may take some time, but we are very interested in continuing to provide some type of access in the same general area.
Visitors are also encouraged to take advantage of the extensive 13.3-mile network of official trails that are available within Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park system as depicted in the attached map. Further information on these trails and more than 600 miles of trails throughout the County may be found at www.trails.lacounty.gov or on the Trails LA County mobile app.
