Description

This is an 18 mile mountain bicycle ride through many conservation properties. The trails wind through the woods, ascending and descending the glacial moraine, and offering many views of the water. Beginning at the Chappy ferry, the ride heads to North Neck Highlands and Cove Meadow Preserves for beautiful views of Cape Poge Gut and Cape Poge Bay. From this lofty perch on North Neck, the outing ducks into the woods, crosses the Chappaquiddick Road, rambles through Three Ponds Reservation, and leads to the vast salt marshes and sassafras islands of Poucha Pond Reservation.

The trail emerges on the broad expanse of Wasque Reservation, featuring stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the waves breaking off the Wasque Rip. On the return, a straight shot trail at the Packard Preserve leads to a breathtaking view of Katama Bay. The trail then winds through conservation land and on some roads, passing the Mary Harris Francis Preserve and its views of Edgartown Harbor and Caleb’s Pond, as it heads back to the ferry.

The ride is rugged in places as it goes over tree roots and up and down.  Otherwise, it follows fairly level, well-maintained trails and roads as it explores the island.
