Hanapepe Salt Ponds Historic Preserve

The Hanapepe Salt Ponds are located on the island of Kauai in the town of Hanapepe. These ponds hold historical and cultural significance due to the production of salt that is still farmed to this day. Every May, community stewards begin preparing for the summer salt gathering season. These stewards operate the salt ponds under the idea of communal stewardship, where it can not be used for commercial purposes. Instead, the salt is given away, bartered, or for personal use such as seasoning food, traditional ceremonies, or medicinal use. The Hanapepe salt farms are on of two major areas in the islands that harvest salt in the traditional manner.
