If the 60-year-old ruby wallpaper at Club Waziema, embellished with gold paisley, could speak, it would no doubt tell tales of its former run as jazz club during Divisadero Street's "Harlem of the West" days, that then gave way to the Summer of Love. Ike and Tina, James Brown and Billie Holiday all performed here, before the club lost its mojo and was shuttered for many years. In the late '90s the current owners, from Ethiopia, took over and besides adding a menu of family recipes and securing a full bar license, little has changed. Club Waziema is like a museum to the neighborhood's past with old posters and photos of long-ago performers. A pool table and jukebox will keep you occupied. The bar still occasionally hosts live music and community events. The best way to find out what's on? Walk by and check out the flyers on the front window.
