Aloha, State of Hawaiʻi!

We’re excited to welcome the State of Hawaiʻi’s Department of Land and Natural Resources to OuterSpatial! The mission of the department is to “Enhance, protect, conserve and manage Hawaii’s unique and limited natural, cultural and historic resources held in public trust for current and future generations of the people of Hawaii nei, and its visitors, in partnership with others from the public and private sectors.”

As part of this partnership, we worked with the department’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) to give hunters the ability to check-in/out of hunting units through the OuterSpatial app. This new capability will greatly reduce the burden on hunters, who previously had to stop at a permit station to sign in before starting their hunt. It will also make it easier for DOFAW officers in the field to manage the permitting process and reporting.

This partnership also adds detailed outdoor recreation information — including boundaries, trails, and points of interest — for all of the areas DOFAW manages across the Hawaiʻian islands. This land covers more than a million acres, or roughly a quarter of the land area in Hawaiʻi.

Below is a video DOFAW put together to highlight the Hawaiʻi community in OuterSpatial:

You can read the official press release on the DOFAW website, and you can access the outdoor recreation information (and check-in/out of hunting units) in OuterSpatial in the Hawaiʻi community.
