Keauhou Cooperative Nene Sanctuary
Keauhou Cooperative Nene Sanctuary is a 3,898-acre plot of land on Hawaiʻi island. This nene sanctuary is one of three located on Hawaiʻi island and is adjacent to the Kipuka ʻAinahou Nene Sanctuary (which is on state owned land) and in-between Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanoes.
This area was established as a cooperation between the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) and the private land owner Kamehameha Schools as a means to protect the endemic and currently vulnerable nene species. This cooperation was born out of a bigger Nene recovery plan that seeks to create multiple nene sanctuaries throughout the state.
